Artist Statement

Barbara Bickell's paintings deal with themes of flying, weather, maps, and the sky. A mixture of science and magic, imaginary landscapes are infused with calm. They are playful templates for do-it-yourself serenity.

Barbara Bickell's assemblages are an engaging combination of painting and sculpture on a small scale. The boxes combine natural materials—e.g. eggs, feathers, twigs—and man-made objects. The boxes are dreamscapes, as seen through a window, idealized landscapes in miniature, or the possibility of a whole universe inside a box. They represent optimism and hope, a journey toward enlightenment. Or a tiny version of heaven.
